Weekly Sessions
MEDITATION SESSIONS are held weekly at two venues:
1) Quiet Centre, University of Surrey, Guildford, on most Sundays from 10 am to 12 noon.
2) Vine Hall, Vine Road, East Molesey, Surrey, on most Tuesdays from 7pm to 9 pm.
They are intended for people who have taken our Beginners' Course. These sessions are the backbone of what we do, and provide essential and continuing orientation and support for people serious about the practice.
1) GUILDFORD: There are two concurrent sessions on Sundays. If you are not sure which session you should attend, ask one of the instructors: Geoff, Linda or Colin.
*The Guided Session is designed to be especially helpful for those who have just done the Beginners' Class and/or have not done very much meditation before (less than 12 previous Guided Sessions at MBW, or equivalent), and the sitting sessions are not longer than 20 minutes, and verbal guidance is given. It mainly involves Tranquillity (Concentration) Meditation, with some walking meditation. This session is in the large circular room, on the right as you enter the Centre. This session runs 10-11 am. It is followed by tea and 'Ethics discussion', 11-12 noon.
*The Silent Session is for those have had more experience of meditation (who have done the Beginners' Class, and attended 12 or more Guided Sessions at MBW, or equivalent), and do not need verbal guidance, and wish to sit for 45 minutes (and 10 mins walking meditation). It mainly involves Insight Meditation. This session is in the back room of the Quiet Centre, University of Surrey, straight ahead as you enter the Centre. This session runs 10-11 am in the Back Room. (To avoid disturbance please do not enter the Silent Session once the door closes at 10am, but wait in the reception area.) It is followed by tea and 'Ethics discussion', 11-12 noon.
NOTE To assist the Silent Session meditators' concentration, we recommend you attend this session only if you have attended MBW before and discussed matters with one of the instructors.
Classical Reading session: there will usually be an optional 30 minute session (12.15-12.45) of a reading from a classical Dharma text taken from the Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana (Tibetan, Shingon), or sometimes non-Buddhist, traditions. This is open to everyone.
Chanting: This is an option, and takes place only at the Guildford Sunday session, following the main session, at 12.15-12.45 pm for those who benefit from chanting.
2) EAST MOLESEY: There is one session 7-9pm on Tuesdays. This is identical to the Sunday 'Guided Session' (Guildford). (There is no 'Silent Session' available at East Molesey yet.)
The Guided Session is designed to be helpful for those who have just done the Beginners' Class and/or have not done very much meditation before (less than 12 previous Guided Sessions at MBW, or equivalent), and the sitting sessions are not longer than 20 minutes, and verbal guidance is given. It mainly involves Tranquillity (Concentration) Meditation, with some walking meditation and chanting. It is, of course, open to everyone (who has at least done the Beginners' Class), even if they have had considerable meditation experience before. (NOTE There is no Silent Session or Classical Reading session at East Molesey yet. MBW will consider adding these in the future.)
